Jimmy Garoppolo was a key part of the San Francisco 49ers’ run to the Super Bowl where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite the hate he receives now, there was a time when Jimmy G did nothing but win games for the Niners. Following the Super Bowl LIV loss, it became clear that Garoppolo wasn’t the guy for the team. So, when asked for his pick in Super Bowl LVIII, Garoppolo gave an answer that won’t win him any fans in his former home.
Garoppolo’s pick of the Chiefs to win, 35-31 may not sit well with Niners fans. Niners Nation interviewed Jimmy G during Super Bowl week festivities and it sounded like he wouldn’t mind still playing for San Francisco.
Regardless, all 49ers fans care about is winning Super Bowl No. 6 for the franchise. If Garoppolo had completed that pass to Emmanuel Sanders four years ago, things might be different today. But that doesn’t change the fact that his injuries played a big part in his time with the Niners. His lack of availability contributed to his demise with San Francisco. While he wasn’t the best QB, he won games for the team. However, when it mattered most, the team lost.
Kyle Shanahan’s impatience may have factored into Garoppolo’s situation. With a team built and ready to win, Shanahan can only tolerate so much. If there’s someone else he trusts, like Purdy, the current backup quarterback, Shanahan will go with them.
